LMCC Urges FCC to Address Harmful Interference from Digital Television Stations

In a letter filed today, the Land Mobile Communications Council (LMCC) has urgently requested that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) address numerous instances of harmful interference from newly authorized digital television (DTV) stations to established private land mobile radio (PLMR) systems. The interference has rendered affected PLMR facilities entirely unusable in certain markets, resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars of lost revenue as customers of commercial systems have been forced to search for alternative communications options should such alternatives even be available. Further, in addition to the serious economic impact on PLMR victims, the interference is endangering the safety of employees and is posing a major threat to public safety in several urban areas. The LMCC request noted that the urgency of the problems demand FCC action to enforce its regulations and policies as promptly as possible and to avoid the creation of similar problems in the future.

The letter was accompanied by a report listing the specific instances of harmful interference across the country, remedial actions taken, the level of cooperation from the broadcasters, and FCC assistance to date.
